Antimicrobial properties are agents that kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms. There are two main types of antimicrobials; the microbicides are agents with the ability to kill the microbes. Then there are the bacteriostatic agents, which inhibit the growth of microbes. Disinfectants such as bleach kill an extensive range of microbes on non-living surfaces such as a table to prevent the spread of illness. Antiseptics, however, are applied to living tissues such as our skin to reduce the chances of infection during surgery. Finally, we have antibiotics that destroy microorganisms within our bodies.
Everyday natural items with Antimicrobial properties include Tumeric, Honey, Cranberry Juice and Cinnamon. Bamboo is an excellent example of a natural product that has naturally high antimicrobial properties. Natural Essential Oils can also have high levels of microbial protection.
